Continuing to answer some of the questions left outstanding from our recent webinar on the Market IQ on Content Security ( freely downloadable at http://www.aiim.org/article-industrywatch.asp?ID=33810 ). View earlier Q&A postings via the tag aiimQ&A on my blog, as well as Carl's blog (TakingAIIM).
Any further questions or commentary to this, please feel free to comment here on the blog. If you have examples (good, bad, ugly) that apply to the topic, or contrary experiences/opinions, please share them - there is much to be discussed!
Q: Can Content Rights follow e-mail attachments to RIM and other PDAs today?
A: We're calling this Enterprise Rights Management or Information Rights Management, but yes, it's possible. As with any system focused on this, you may need to ask very specific questions about what file types, applications, and specific devices are supported, and just as you typically have to pay a per user or per device license to "enterprise enable" your RIM (Blackberry) or other PDA for e-mail through Exchange for example, the same (typically) with extending your ERM/IRM solution to alternative access devices.
Incidentally, a failing of ERM/IRM, from a deployment standpoint, is the frequent exclusion of environments such as Unix, Macintosh, or Linux. Don't assume anything when examining these solutions - make sure that ALL of your needed platforms are covered, before making a buying decision, and if the platform isn't covered now, ask for the roadmap/timeline expected to support your needs. ERM/IRM is still in the Early Adoptor and Innovator area of Geoffrey Moore's technology adoption lifecycle, but as we progress over the chasm and into "mainstreet," this will continue to change and evolve to cover a wider range of possibilities in the enterprise.
